Lapland Ski Area Skiing to 23.30 on NYE

Finland's largest ski area, Levi, says its lifts will keep running to 11.30pm tonight, New Year's Eve, for anyone wishing to ski or ride in the New Year.

The resort plans to start its party, including a big fireworks display, when the lifts stop running.

Snowfall Returns to Eastern US Ski Slopes After Rain

Fresh snowfall has been reported in Eastern North America after a Christmas week marred by periods of heavy rain.

Maine's Sunday River (pictured above), which was one of those hardest hit by the rain, which damaged some infrastructure causing it to close for several days in the run up to Christmas, was one of those to see the most fresh snowfall on Saturday – around 10cm (4"). It is back up to 18% of its terrain open.

Indoor Snow Centre Fully Self-Sufficient in Green Energy

An indoor snow centre in Germany has become fully self-sufficient in green energy by building a vast field of solar panels covering the ground on two sides of the huge building.

The Neuss Alpine Park has covered an area of 30,000 m² generating enough solar power to cover the entire energy needs not just of its indoor snow hall but also all associated buildings.

Last Big Canadian Resort Opens For Season At Last

Most ski areas right across North America have been struggling with warm weather and a lack of snowfall impacting their ability to open much terrain and in some cases to open at all.

It's unusual for almost all parts of the continent to be impacted at the same time, typically when one side of the continent is doing badly for snowfall, the other is doing well. This time through there are problems almost everywhere and the blame appears to lie with the 'very strong El Nino' that's bringing warmer weather from the Pacific – alongside the growing impact of climate change.

Ski Areas in the Pyrenees Struggle in Dry Conditions

It has been a challenging start to the 23-24 season in the Pyrenees with most ski areas in the region struggling to open many runs or in some cases, to open at all.

There have been no big snowfalls in the region as yet and temperatures have been too warm for snowmaking for much of the past two months.

Cardrona To Have New Zealand’s Largest Ski Area From 2025

A new high-speed chairlift expanding the terrain at Cardrona ski area in New Zealand from winter 2025 will see the resort offer the country's biggest ski area from the winter after next.

Work will begin this February on foundations for the new Soho Basin Express, a Doppelmayr six-seater chairlift. After a break in construction for the 2024 ski season, the lift will be installed by 2025, ahead of that ski season starting.

Snow in Australia’s Summer

Australia's Mt Buller ski area has been stockpiling snow in order to open for a few days of 'Snow in Summer' fun there from December 29th to 30th.[/b]

The snowy attraction opens with free snow play offered daily in the resort's Magic Forest between noon and 6pm. Daytime temperatures are currently in the low 20s Celsius in the area.

Huge Snowfalls in the Alps

Snowfalls of up to metre in 24 hours have been reported in parts of the Alps.

Austria's Zillertal Arena claimed the huge snow total and posted pictures to prove it.

The snowfall has arrived with stormy weather, including hurricane force winds, which has also closed access roads and led to some ski areas temporarily shutting down.

Dave Ryding Takes 3rd In Madonna di Campiglio World Cup

Britain's Dave Ryding has taken his 7th career podium at the age of 37 in tonight's Night Slalom World Cup, being staged for the 70th time at Madonna di Campiglio in Italy.

Ryding had been lying in 15th place after the first run but had a storming second run and 12 of the skiers racing after him filed to bet his combined time.

Big Sky Unveils New Tram on 50th Anniversary of Opening Day

The World's First Electric Snowboard

A company called Cyrusher, which has made its name for selling e-bikes, has turned its attention to snow sports and launched what it says is the world's first electric snowboard.

The 15kg board they have named "The Ripple" comes in at a 156cm length, can carry a rider weighing up to 250klb and between 5'4" and 6'4" tall and can hit speeds on the flat of up to 50 km/h (31 mph) the company says.

Rain Closes New England Ski Slopes Just Before Christmas

A major rain storm has led to the temporary closure of most ski areas in New England this week as resorts endeavour to repair damage caused by the torrential rain. Snow cover is reported to have been washed away and some are reporting damage to roads and other infrastructure.

Giant Dry Ski Slope Opens In Romania

A huge new dry ski slope has opened at Aprilia Park, located in Romania's Gorj County.

The new slope, supplied by Italian company Neveplast who also supplied the surface for the famous power plant ski slope in Copenhagen, is 311 metres long and has three tubing courses running alongside the ski slope: two straight tracks measuring 166 metres each, and one track with two parabolic curves measuring 176 metres.

Big Ski Regions Go XL on Open Terrain

Europe's largest ski areas have begun moving towards full opening for Christmas and new year with the amount of area offering 200km or more of open slopes jumping from one to six this weekend.

For the past three weeks only the Samnaun-Ischgl cross-border Swiss-Austrian ski area had offer over 200km of slopes open, but it's now dropped to sixth place with other big areas overtaking it.

Scotland’s Season Starting Thanks To All-Weather Snowmaking Machines

Although there's some natural snowfall in the forecast after a very warm and windy few days, it looks like Scotland's ski season will get underway in the week before Christmas thanks to all-weather snowmaking machines.

After years of very unpredictable snow cover challenging their operating plans, all five Scottish centres invested in all-weather snowmaking machines such as the TechnoAlpin SnowFactory to ensure they have at least some snow to offer visitors through the season, even when mother nature doesn't play ball.

Jackson Hole smashes world record for most denim-clad skiers

It was a sea of denim in Jackson Hole earlier this week as they attempted to break to world record for the number of skiers in jeans.

Described by the resort as "a rite of passage", skiing in jeans has gone out of style somewhat since its heyday in the 1980s.

Risoul Opening on 20th December After Flood Damage

The French ski resort of Risoul which saw its base and access road severely damaged by flash flood which brought mud and boulders down the mountainside with them at the start of this month, just a week before it was due to open for its 23-24 ski season, says it will still open in time for Christmas week.

Levi Begins 3 Weeks Without Daylight

In common with many ski areas up in northern Scandinavia, Finland's largest ski area, Levi, has entered a period of 'Polar night' during which the sun does not rise above the horizon.

The sun set yesterday and will not reappear above the horizon until 12.16 on New Year's Day. The period is known as 'Kaamos' in the region.

Andorra Takes First GS World Cup Podium

Challenging conditions on the Face de Bellevarde above Val d'Isere on Saturday proved too much for some of the world's best skiers competing in the first World Cup Siant Slalom race of the season on Saturday.

However despite significant snowfall falling during the race, Swiss skier Marco Odermatt took his third consecutive victory on the Bellevarde (2"13'93), winning by almost a second (0.98') over Austria's Marco Scharz.

Robbie Williams Opens Schladming’s Season

Robbie Williams staged two concerts on successive evenings officially open the season at Schladming-Dachstein (in fact the season had begun few weeks before thanks to great November snowfalls).

Set against a picturesque snowy backdrop, it was a sold-out stadium on Friday, with more than ten thousand guests there to ski and see the Thursday concert.

World Cup Finals Heading to Austria

Austria's huge Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn ski area will host the Ski World Cup finals on the Zwölferkogel at the culmination of the 23-24 ski racing season on 16-24 March 2024.

With no Olympics or World Championships this winter it'll be the biggest Alpine racing event of the season, coming less than a year before the Austrian resort hosts the FIS Alpine Ski World Championships 2025.

Les 2 Alpes readies for Rise Festival

Les Deux Alpes has opened for the season, one of the first French resorts to do so, and is reporting great conditions for early December with 50cm of snow at village level and the snow nearly 2 metres deep up high. The snow and early opening is thanks to 70% of the ski area being above 2,100m and climbing as high as the glacier-slopes at 3,600m.

Dolomiti Superski Opening With 500 Miles Of Slopes

The Dolomiti Superski area will fully open for the season this Friday, 8 December, saying it will have over 320 lifts running and around two thirds of its 1,200 piste kilometres available in all 12 of its ski resorts.

Parts of the huge Italian ski area began opening on 25 November in the Kronplatz and Obereggen/Pampeago ski resorts and already set higher visitor numbers than for the same period a year ago, with skier numbers reported up 15%.

French Resort Risoul Cut Off & Damaged by Flash Floods

French ski resort Risoul has been cut off from the outside world and severely damaged by a weather event which brought a torrent of water, snow, ice, mud and rocks down the mountain side.

The ski area, in the southern French Alps, had not fully opened for the season and there were only about 100 people there at the time. So far no one has been reported hurt.

Val Gardena Next Hope For 23-24 World Cup Speed Ski Racing Season Start

The unfortunate failure to launch the Alpine speed ski racing season has continued with all three men's races cancelled over the past three days at Beaver Creek.

The planned two World Cup Downhill and one Super G races were cancelled for various reasons including too much snowfall, low visibility and strong winds.

A snowy November, and big snowfalls ongoing and forecast for the week ahead, have kicked off the European ski season in style.

Flaine, France, one of many Alpine resorts where it's bucketing down snow today...

We are into the final month of the year and this is, of course, the big one for ski areas opening – we start December (and winter by the meteorological measure) with about 200 centres open already, and by the end of that month the number will be somewhere between 3,000 and 5,000 ...no one really knows how many of the world's smaller resorts are still operating!
