Starting at Chamonix, the train journey will take you high up into the mountains so the site of the Mer de Glace. The journey on the famous little red rack railway will take approximately 20 minutes and leaves frequently throughout the day.

Once at the top you can visit the ice grotto of the famous Mer de Glace, a giant glacier first discovered by British pioneers. You can access the grotto either by cable car, which is included in the price of your ticket, or walk down the rocky mountain paths. You can also visit the crystal gallery, as well as two other museums.

Take lunch at the Grand Hotel du Montenvers and enjoy some of the local food and wines while soaking in the scenery.

The destination also offers walking routes to suit many different levels of ability, as well as a spectacular view of the valley below and surrounding mountains.

The prices for this trip are extremely reasonable considering all of the activities and facilities available to you and very much worth setting a whole day aside to do.

The train leaves Chamonix from Gare du Montevers, which is situated in the southern part of the town centre, regularly throughout the day. It is also readily available to return you to Chamonix once you have soaked up enough of the scenery.
