Amazing conditions in the Portes du Soleil!
Morzine, France to Torgon,Switzerland return January 29th 2009
With amazing snow conditions since the start of the season in the Portes du Soleil there really is no reason not to get the most out of your ski pass and discover all of the out of the way places that it covers.
With a promising blue sky day we decided to head from Morzine, up to Avoriaz and all the way to the Swiss resort of Torgon and back. A route that we had not done for a couple of seasons. Once out of the relative hustle and bustle of Avoriaz Linderet Bowl we headed via Plaine Dranse ,three red runs and a blue all the way to the bottom Linga, part of the Chatel ski area. A very quick hop on the free ski bus found us in the centre of Chatel and we were soon in the cable car up to Super Chatel and heading towards our destination. From the top of the Morclan chairlift out of Super Chatel we entered new territory, superb groomed pristine pistes that were barely touched by other skiers that day. Trees heavy with snow and the most stunning views. We found a picnic spot surveying the whole mountain range with clear views of Mont Blanc nestled between the Dents du Midi and Dents Blanches before dropping down into Torgon. Truly majestic. There were a couple of options to return via Morgin, Champoussin and Les Crosets but we decided to save that for another day and we decided to retrace our route, heading back happy in the knowledge that we had skipped the crowds, skied hard and made the most of our day. Back in the Linderet bowl by 3.30pm in time for a bit of deck chair and vin chaud action, it just shows how far you can get in a day on your pass.

Beautiful Sushine
We've recently has six inches or more of fresh snow and the sun has returned bringing fantastic spring conditions to Morzine and Avoriaz.
With the deep base from earlier in the season, this is some of the best skiing we've had for this time in the season.

Over 1 metre of fresh snow
The last few days have seen a massive snowfall of over 1 metre (around 4 foot) in Avoriaz and Morzine. A fantastic start to the season before the lifts are even open!
The pisteurs have been hard at work and have pisted many of the major runs ensuring the snow gets packed down nice and hard and keeps the ground well frozen. Although the temperatures are well below zero and are showing no signs of warming up for a few days yet.
We have early season discount available to take advantage of this new snow, so take a look at our web site.

A foot of Fresh Powder
The snow has come early again this season and the temperatures have remained low meaning we've received a fantastic base on all the upper slopes already.
Yesterdays powder was a foot deep! And there is a whole lot more snow expected on Sunday.
The resort of Avoriaz linked with Morzine is already open for the season.

Clear Blue Skies
The last few days have been fantastic sunny weather and clear skies!
This ensures low temperatures at night allowing the pisteurs to groom the slopes to perfection. The mornings are hard packed corduroy giving way to spring conditions in the afternoon with softer and slushier snow.
The lower slopes are becoming fairly bare but the upper slopes above 1500m are particularly good still and should remain so until the end of the season without any trouble. The long range weather forecast is pointing at huge dumps of snow for this coming weekend even as low down as Geneva.
Cream up to avoid sun burn and enjoy basking in the warm sunshine with a cold beer.

Heavy Snowfall
The last few days has brought heavy snowfall all over the Portes du Soleil. The freezing level is at around 1500m for the moment, which means it is raining in Morzine village itself but the mountain is getting masses of new snow!
The snow was so heavy this morning up on the Forney (in Avoriaz), visibility was minimal. This is helping to keep the crowds away and with another 30cm expected later today and overnight, there should be a fantastic powder day for when the weather clears.

Huge snowfall !
Yesterday the snow was falling at an incredible rate and overnight the freezing level has fallen from around 1300m to below 1000m (the level of Morzine town itself).
This has brought a fantastic improvement to the base depth which will hopefully see us through to a late end to the season.
Today conditions are deep powder both on and off piste until the piste bashers get a chance to cover the all the pistes.
Yet more snow is forecast this week !

Powder and fully open pistes.
Just got back from a fantastic day snowboarding.
The snow levels are almost back up where they should be and the off-piste available today was outstanding.
Spent a large part of the day in deep powder riding up and down the same section in the area known locally as the 'satellite run'. All the main pistes were reopened and the lift queues flowing as normal again with no waiting to speak of.
The snow continued to fall on and off throughout the day and the temperatures are staying very low. The forecast for the coming days is also looking fantastic.

30cm (6 in) of lovely fresh powder !
The snow starting falling thick and fast yesterday around 2:00pm giving us some much needed snow coverage on the lower slopes both in Morzine and the Portes du Soleil ski area. More than 30cm has fallen in Morzine village centre so the slopes should have got even more.
Avoriaz has faired well throughout the recent snow drought but has been a little overcrowded in the last couple of weeks with a good number of the lower slopes being closed in surrounding resorts.
Hopefully, the piste bashers will be out in force today grooming the lower slopes and the whole region will be fully open again.
Just heading up the mountain now so will report back at the end of the day....

40 cm of fresh snow in Avoriaz
Just back from a fantasitc morning skiing in Avoriaz. There has been about 40 cm of fresh snow and all the links to Chatel and Les Crosset were being opened up. Morzine and Les Gets have also had a good covering and I'd expect the area to be fully open tomorrow. We hardly had to wait on any of the lifts once up the hill, forecast to clear tomorrow and then more snow at the end of the week! Nice start to the New Year.

Opening this week end!
Friday just gone saw a great snowfall once the frezzing level decided to drop. What started off as rain quickly changed into a great dump of snow covering the whole of Avoriaz in more than a foot of fresh powder. Morzine and Les Gets villages also got a nice covering and Les Gets kindly opened a small ski area for some pre-season skiing and boarding.
In Avoriaz just yesterday, the piste bashers could be seen preparing the pistes for the opening weekend and everything looks set to go!

The first snow fall of the season !
Morzine has been covered in low cloud since late yesterday afternoon and the rain was coming down heavily in the village at 1000m.
It's now Sunday afternoon and the cloud is beginning to break! The first snow of the winter season has fallen.
The top of the Point de Ressachaux is covered in snow from the tree line upwards. The Ressachaux is one of the highest mountains viewable from Morzine village and the peak is at about 2270m (or thereabouts).
Let's hope it is here to stay!

Overcast and Mild
The weather is overcast in Morzine today and the temperature quite mild for this time of year although the snow will surely be on the way soon.
Fingers crossed for some early season snow. On December 1st last season, the village was under two feet of fresh snow.

The Sun is Shining
Another stunning day of clear sunshine in Morzine today. The weather has been fine for a few days now really.
It's cold enough during the nights for snow up high on the peaks of Nyon and the Ressechaux but there's just no precipitation around at the moment... which is nice as the ski lifts aren't open so there's no real need for snow.
